The answer to your question is - yes - you can safely eat mackerel in brine straight out of the can. But - maybe you might want to taste it and see if it is too salty for your taste. ... Yet another way to eat mackerel is with mayonnaise and lime juice. Normally we drain off the brine before eating the mackerel....

This is the date after which, in theory, the product is not safe to eat. UB dates are most important in anything that contains animal products and especially in anything fresh, rather than preserved. A day or two past the UB date of smoked mackerel fillets – no problemo, for me anyway....
